The scene I choose is from the film Imitation Game. It is about 55 seconds long and consists of 21
shots. The scene begins with a lateral tracking medium close-up shot that
follows Joan as she comes into the room. The cuts immediately into a medium
wide using the foreground wipe with the bookshelf. It comes to a stop when Joan
got to Alan, and it follows up with a pan as Joan looks behind her when two
other people come into the room.
When it cuts to Alan’s face, the scene starts to use shaky
cam; which adds actions and excitement to the scene even though the characters
are just talking. There are a few shots that first show the character’s face
first then tilts down to their hands showing us the papers, or in reverse;
showing the papers then the characters face. This scene also has a shot with Alan
focused in the foreground and Hugh unfocused in the background, then the focus
switches as Hugh begins to speak. In the end of the scene, there is a matched
action cut, when the group starts to run out of the room. The camera never seems to be still, there are always
movements in every shot. Most of the shots are either medium close-ups or
close-ups. This allows us to feel how
the characters are all in a rush to find the answer. These close-up shots make
us feel their breathing also give a bit of claustrophobic effect. The average
shot length is also short, which also take our breath away. Even though the ASL
is so short, we can see who each character are talking to because of the 180
degree rule.
